The SL series was developed by Kenya’s Scott Laboratories in the 1930s, with SL28 selected in 1935 from a drought-resistant Tanzanian population. It is known for its strong drought tolerance, though it is susceptible to diseases such as coffee leaf rust. Genetic testing has shown its close relationship to Bourbon.
Volcán Azul is operated by the fifth generation of the family, Alejo Castro Kahle. The estate focuses on high-quality coffee cultivation on the slopes of the Poás Volcano. Since placing second in the Costa Rica COE in 2017, the estate has continued to achieve remarkable results.
This washed SL28 was harvested in March 2026 at 1,700 meters above sea level.
The cup presents notes of red apple, smoked plum, and cranberry, with a sweet and delicate character.
